(2001/2003)

Contemporary Art Center Skopje 2003

A project consists of drawings, photographs, an architectural model, video and sound recordings filtered through a variety of references: primary school textbooks (Nature and Social Studies), classic 70s earthworks (Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and Walter De Maria’s New York Earth Room), music by early Belle & Sebastian, and an advertisement from Purple Magazine from the Summer of 1999. These encounters explore the way in which memory is inscribed in the experience of identity.

Following a now-classic strategy of recording a particular process through all of its consequences, Hristina Ivanoska and Yane Calovski assigned themselves the task of traveling on a route conforming to the shape of a spiral through their native Macedonia. Nature and Social Studies: Spiral Trip, the multilayered work generated by this charge, first conceived in 2000, continued to unfold until 2003. Starting from Izvor, the geographic midpoint of the country, and proceeding to Skopje, its cultural and political hub, Ivanoska and Calovski proposed to make this journey in seven consecutive days, employing any means necessary. Harnessing the forward drive stored in this elemental form to animate their journey through a territory, tempered at the time by political and social flux, the team performed the spiral as a physical drawing. Humble in its material essence, it is monumental in its scope.

An installation consists of fresh flowers, fruits and eggs, dead insects and fish, a drawing; (destroyed)

This environment, which functioned only for a day –was especially created for the Open Studios event at the CCA Kitakyusu in 2000. The work is inspired by the transient state of being, cross-cultural references, and ephemeral and socially ambiguous iconography. The work is at once intimate, freely available, and poetic. It also features a reference to Paul Thek in the form of a portrait drawing that is hidden in the room.
